Virginia Tech vs. Pitt: Which School Offers Better Access to Hospital Internships?

For a student who wants the easiest day-to-day access to a major hospital system, Pitt has the clear location advantage. Its Oakland campus sits alongside UPMC’s flagship academic medical facilities. That density makes it more practical to pursue hospital volunteering, patient-facing service roles, clinical research, physician shadowing, and health-related student jobs during the semester.

Pitt is especially well suited to a student who wants to explore several health professions or specialties before committing. UPMC’s size creates a broad range of departments and research groups, although access is not automatic: students still need to apply, complete clearances and training, and meet each program’s requirements. The advantage is that opportunities are embedded in the surrounding neighborhood rather than requiring a long trip.

Virginia Tech can work well for a student who prefers a larger traditional campus in Blacksburg and is willing to be more proactive about arranging clinical experience. Students can seek opportunities with Carilion Clinic in the New River Valley and LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, both serving the Blacksburg area.
