Is Penn a better undergraduate choice than Rice for becoming a registered nurse?

For a student whose clear goal is to become a registered nurse immediately after college, Penn is the more suitable undergraduate choice. Penn’s School of Nursing offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing that includes nursing coursework, supervised clinical education, and preparation to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam after graduation. Rice does not offer an undergraduate nursing major or a direct BSN pathway.

At Penn, you would apply to the School of Nursing as an undergraduate applicant and enter a program designed around professional nursing from the start. The curriculum combines sciences and liberal arts with clinical experiences, so graduating students are positioned to pursue RN licensure rather than needing an additional nursing degree first.

Rice could make sense for someone interested in health care but not committed to nursing specifically. A Rice student could study a related field, complete prerequisite courses, and then apply to an accelerated or traditional nursing program elsewhere after earning a bachelor’s degree.
