Is MIT or Caltech Academically More Difficult?

I’m a high school junior interested in studying engineering or physics, and I’m trying to understand how the academic intensity at MIT compares with Caltech. I’m mainly wondering whether one is generally considered more academically demanding, rather than comparing admissions difficulty.

Caltech is often perceived as marginally more academically intense on a student-by-student basis, largely because of its exceptionally small undergraduate population, highly concentrated STEM curriculum, and close faculty expectations. Both schools have policies intended to ease the transition for first-year students and strong peer-support systems. At Caltech, the intensity is often described as constant and immersive because nearly everyone is taking demanding quantitative courses in a very small setting. At MIT, the workload can be just as heavy, particularly in fields such as electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, and physics, but the larger environment can feel more varied.

For a student deciding between them, the meaningful distinction is less about which one has objectively harder classes and more about preferred academic atmosphere: Caltech is a tightly focused, intimate scientific community, while MIT combines comparable technical rigor with more scale and curricular breadth.
