Is MIT or Caltech More Collaborative for Undergraduate Students?

I’m a high school senior interested in studying engineering or physics, and I’m trying to understand what the student culture is like at MIT compared with Caltech. I’m especially looking for an environment where students regularly help each other and collaborate rather than compete.

The biggest practical difference is scale: Caltech’s very small undergraduate community makes collaboration feel intimate and constant within a tight cohort, while MIT offers an equally real but broader collaborative culture across many more students, labs, classes, and interests. For the most consistently close-knit, everyone-knows-everyone version of collaboration, Caltech has the edge. MIT is the stronger choice for someone who wants a collaborative engineering or physics culture but also values a much larger range of people, research areas, extracurricular communities, and ways to find their academic niche.
