Which offers better undergraduate research opportunities: Georgia Tech or the University of Rochester?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Georgia Tech and the University of Rochester for an undergraduate STEM program. Research opportunities are one of my biggest priorities, especially the chance for undergraduates to work with faculty and get meaningful lab experience.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access: Georgia Tech offers a larger, more engineering- and technology-intensive research ecosystem, while the University of Rochester can make it easier for an undergraduate to build close, sustained relationships with faculty in a smaller academic setting. At Georgia Tech, students can pursue work across major engineering, computing, robotics, materials, sustainability, and applied-science labs, often alongside graduate students and external industry or government partners. Rochester has substantial strengths in areas such as optics and photonics, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, physics, data science, and medical research, with an undergraduate environment that is typically more intimate.

Its research culture is deeply embedded in many technical departments, but popular labs can be competitive, and a student may need to take initiative through faculty outreach, coursework, and campus research programs to secure a role.

At Rochester, the smaller student body and strong emphasis on undergraduate involvement can make direct faculty contact more attainable earlier in college. That can matter if “meaningful” research means taking ownership of a project, meeting regularly with a professor, and staying in one lab for several semesters. Rochester’s flexible curriculum can also make it easier to combine research across disciplines, such as engineering and neuroscience or physics and music technology.

For most undergraduate STEM students prioritizing close mentorship and early hands-on involvement, the University of Rochester has a modest edge. Georgia Tech is the more compelling choice when your interests align with its particularly extensive engineering and computing research infrastructure and you are comfortable navigating a larger, faster-paced research environment.
