Is the University of Georgia or American University better for starting a career in Washington, DC?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus campus breadth: American University places you in Washington, DC, where internships can be built into the academic year, while the University of Georgia offers a larger traditional-campus experience and a strong statewide alumni network but requires more deliberate planning to enter the DC market.

At American, students can pursue internships during fall and spring semesters with federal agencies, congressional offices, advocacy groups, think tanks, media organizations, and international institutions without leaving campus. That proximity matters because repeated part-time internships and informational conversations often lead to references and first jobs in the city.

UGA can still be an effective route, especially through public affairs coursework, faculty connections, and an extensive alumni base. A UGA student can reach DC through summer internships, semester programs, and targeted networking, but it will take more initiative than simply being surrounded by opportunities during the school year. UGA may also be more appealing if you want strong options beyond politics, a major SEC-campus environment, or expect to build your first professional network in Georgia or the Southeast.

For a student whose primary goal is to start a politics or public-policy career in Washington immediately after college, American University provides the more direct and convenient path.
