University of Georgia vs. American University for International Relations: Which Is Better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and access: American University places international relations students in Washington, D.C., near embassies, federal agencies, think tanks, and advocacy organizations, while the University of Georgia offers a more traditional flagship-university experience in Athens with a potentially much lower cost for Georgia residents. American’s School of International Service is built specifically around international affairs and makes semester-long internships during the academic year especially attainable. UGA’s School of Public and International Affairs provides a strong International Affairs program, but students will need to be more intentional about pursuing D.C., Atlanta, or overseas opportunities.

For career preparation aimed at diplomacy, policy analysis, international development, global advocacy, or related Washington-based work, American has the clearer structural advantage. Its D.C. setting can make informational interviews, guest speakers, part-time internships, and alumni networking part of a normal semester rather than something reserved for summers. The school’s international-affairs focus also means a larger share of classmates, faculty, and campus programming will be centered on global issues.

UGA should not be treated as a weak option. It offers the resources of a major public research university, strong language study and study-abroad possibilities, and connections in Georgia’s capital and business community. A motivated student can build an excellent international-relations profile there, particularly by combining the major with a language, regional focus, research, internships, and overseas experience. The financial difference matters substantially, since graduate school is common in many international-relations careers.

For the stronger overall academic-and-career launch specifically in international relations, American University has the edge because its School of International Service and Washington access are unusually aligned with the field. UGA becomes the more compelling decision when its cost is meaningfully lower, especially for an in-state student who will actively seek out internships and experiential opportunities.
