Which is stronger for undergraduate arts: Stanford or Northwestern?

For a student seeking serious undergraduate arts training across several creative disciplines, Northwestern has the stronger overall infrastructure. Its Bienen School of Music, School of Communication, and Art Theory and Practice program offer distinct, well-developed paths in music, theater, performance, film/television, and visual art. The university also makes it relatively feasible to take courses across these areas rather than treating the arts as a peripheral interest.

Northwestern’s biggest advantage is the depth of its preprofessional performing and media programs. Theater and Radio/Television/Film students work in a highly active production environment, while Bienen provides intensive musical study; the School of Communication gives undergraduates unusually direct access to performance, directing, writing, producing, and screen-based storytelling. Its Evanston location also places students close to Chicago’s major theater, music, museum, and film communities.

Stanford is excellent for an interdisciplinary artist whose work connects to technology, design, entrepreneurship, or academic study. Art Practice, Theater and Performance Studies, Music, and Film and Media Studies can be combined with strong resources in computer science, engineering, and the d.school culture, making Stanford especially compelling for digital art, creative technology, design, and experimental cross-disciplinary projects.

The tradeoff is that Stanford’s arts offerings are less concentrated in the conservatory-style or production-intensive way Northwestern’s are. At Stanford, an arts student may need to be more self-directed in assembling training and opportunities across departments; at Northwestern, the institutional pathways for performers, filmmakers, and musicians are more clearly built into the undergraduate experience.
