How do Rutgers and Duke compare in campus community?

The biggest practical difference is scale: Duke’s smaller, largely residential undergraduate environment makes repeated daily contact and a shared campus rhythm much easier, while Rutgers–New Brunswick offers many communities but requires more intention to find and maintain one. Rutgers students are spread across several campuses, and travel by bus can make the university feel less physically unified.

Duke tends to feel more interconnected in everyday life because many students live near one another, campus events draw from a more concentrated undergraduate population, and residential, academic, and extracurricular circles overlap. The culture is not necessarily intimate for every student, but it is easier to run into classmates, friends, and club peers regularly.

Rutgers has an energetic community, but it is more decentralized. Its size means there are far more student organizations, cultural communities, academic niches, and social scenes, so students can find a very specific group of people.
