Is Rutgers or Stony Brook worth the cost for college?

Choose the lower-cost option unless Rutgers offers a clearly better fit for your major, campus experience, or career plans. For most students, graduating with less debt will matter more than the difference in name recognition between these two schools.

Rutgers New Brunswick has a larger, more traditional college environment, an especially broad menu of majors, and a major alumni presence across New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia.

Stony Brook is particularly compelling for students drawn to STEM, research, engineering, computer science, health-related fields, or access to Long Island and New York City opportunities. Its research setting and proximity to major medical and technology employers can provide strong preparation in those areas.

Compare the actual four-year net price, not the published tuition figure, and include housing, travel, expected yearly aid changes, and the loans you would need. A small annual difference may be reasonable for a program-specific opportunity; a large difference repeated for four years usually is not. Also check each department’s required courses, internship access, graduation timeline, and whether you would be happier in Rutgers’s larger social setting or Stony Brook’s more research-oriented environment.
