How does academic advising compare at UF and UChicago?

For a student prioritizing consistently personal, centrally structured undergraduate advising, UChicago has the edge. College students are assigned academic advisers who help them navigate the Core curriculum, degree requirements, and academic choices from the start, while faculty advisers become especially important once a major is declared. UF provides solid advising and strong degree-tracking tools, but the experience is more dependent on the student’s college, major, and initiative in a much larger university.

UChicago’s small College structure makes it easier for advising to be integrated with academic exploration. The Core requires intentional planning, so advisers routinely discuss how students can combine majors, minors, study abroad, research, and pre-professional interests without losing progress toward graduation. Students also have a clearer division of roles: College academic advisers handle overall planning and policies, while department faculty can advise on the intellectual direction of a major.

At UF, academic advising is organized primarily through individual colleges and departments. That can be a real advantage for students in structured programs such as business, engineering, health-related fields, or other majors with sequenced prerequisites, because advisers tend to know those requirements well. However, access and advising style can vary more across units, and students often need to use resources such as the degree audit, course catalog, and One.UF registration system proactively alongside appointments.

For exploring majors, UChicago offers a more deliberately guided environment because students enter the College without needing to commit immediately and can use the Core to sample fields before declaring.
