Is the University of Virginia or Princeton usually the better financial aid value?

The biggest practical tradeoff is UVA’s much lower starting price for Virginia residents versus Princeton’s exceptionally large institutional grants, which can make Princeton cost less even though its published price is higher. Princeton meets demonstrated need without requiring student loans in its aid packages and has expanded support so many middle-income families receive substantial help. UVA’s AccessUVA program also meets 100% of demonstrated financial need and provides need-based aid without including loans in the initial package.

For an out-of-state student, Princeton is often the stronger financial-aid value because UVA’s nonresident tuition and fees are substantially higher, while Princeton’s grant policy is designed to cover a large share, and sometimes nearly all, of costs for families with financial need. Princeton also provides aid based on its own need analysis, so a family’s actual cost can be markedly below the listed price.

For a Virginia resident, UVA can be very competitive because its in-state cost is already far below Princeton’s sticker price. A resident whose calculated need is moderate, rather than very high, may find that UVA’s lower base cost leaves a similar or smaller family contribution. Families with unusually complex finances, such as home equity, business ownership, divorced parents, or assets that are not reflected in income alone, can also receive meaningfully different results from the two schools.

For Virginia residents, UVA is close enough financially that the schools’ official net price calculators and eventual aid offers, rather than their general aid reputations, should decide the comparison.
