Is Boston College or the University of Chicago harder to get into?

The University of Chicago is generally harder to get into than Boston College. UChicago attracts an exceptionally self-selecting applicant pool with very strong academic records, substantial intellectual engagement outside class, and a large number of applicants using its binding Early Decision options. Its admissions process is especially selective because the university looks for clear evidence that a student would thrive in its intensely discussion-based, inquiry-driven academic culture.

UChicago’s distinctive supplemental essay has also become an important part of its evaluation. The unconventional prompts give applicants a chance to show originality, intellectual playfulness, and depth of thought, so strong grades and activities alone may not distinguish an applicant as much as they would elsewhere.

Boston College is also highly selective and should be treated as a reach for many well-qualified students. Its applicant pool is academically strong, particularly among students drawn to its Jesuit identity, business programs, nursing, and Boston-area setting, but it is typically less difficult to enter overall than UChicago. At BC, a rigorous transcript, sustained involvement, thoughtful writing, and a credible connection to the university’s values and community matter substantially.
