Is the University of Wisconsin–Madison harder to get into than the University of Arizona?

The main practical difference is that Wisconsin–Madison typically expects a stronger overall academic record for admission, while the University of Arizona has a broader-access admissions profile. For a typical undergraduate applicant, UW–Madison is considered more selective than Arizona.

Both universities review more than grades alone, but UW–Madison places substantial weight on the rigor of a student’s high-school curriculum, performance in core academic courses, and sustained academic achievement. The University of Arizona also values those factors, but it has historically admitted a wider range of applicants and offers clearer paths for students whose records fall below the most competitive range.

This does not mean admission to Arizona is automatic, or that every admitted Wisconsin student has a stronger profile than every admitted Arizona student. Residency, high-school course availability, academic preparation, and the applicant pool in a given year can all affect an individual outcome.
