Which university has the stronger undergraduate chemistry program: UIUC or the University of Michigan?

The biggest practical tradeoff is between UIUC’s especially concentrated chemistry, materials, and engineering ecosystem and Michigan’s chemistry program within a broader life-science, medical, and liberal-arts research environment. Both universities have nationally respected chemistry departments, rigorous laboratory curricula, and substantial opportunities for undergraduates to join faculty research groups.

That said, the difference is not large enough to override a meaningful preference for Michigan’s campus, financial package, or stronger interest in chemical biology and medically connected research.
