I’m a high school senior interested in studying computer science and getting involved in research as an undergraduate. I’m comparing the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan, and research access is one of my most important factors. The biggest practical tradeoff is that Michigan offers a more visible, campus-wide undergraduate research pipeline, while Maryland’s location creates unusually strong connections to federal labs and the Washington, D.C., technology-research ecosystem. For the average undergraduate seeking the clearest built-in path to a first research role, Michigan has a slight edge because of its established, broad undergraduate research infrastructure. For a CS student specifically drawn to federal research, security, computing policy, or the D.C.-area tech network, Maryland can be the more distinctive opportunity.
