Michigan State vs. University of Amsterdam: Which offers a better student experience?

I am a high school senior deciding between Michigan State University and the University of Amsterdam. I am trying to understand which would provide a stronger overall day-to-day student experience, especially in terms of campus community, making friends, and feeling connected as an undergraduate.

For the campus community, easy friendship-making, and connected undergraduate life you describe, Michigan State is likely the more satisfying choice. MSU has a large, concentrated residential campus in East Lansing, extensive residence-hall life, major athletics, and a very active student-organization culture, so students repeatedly see the same people through classes, dining, events, and campus traditions. Its scale can feel big at first, but that scale creates many built-in ways to find a smaller circle.

The University of Amsterdam offers a distinctly different experience: an academically strong university embedded in one of Europe’s most international and lively cities. Its buildings are spread across Amsterdam rather than organized around a single self-contained campus, and students often live independently throughout the city. That can be exciting for someone who wants urban freedom, museums, nightlife, public transit, and an international peer group, but it usually requires more initiative to create a consistent college community.

Housing is an especially practical difference. Amsterdam’s tight housing market can make settling in and living near classmates more complicated, while MSU’s undergraduate residential options make the first-year social transition more structured. At UvA, friendships may form through a specific program, student association, shared housing, or city activities rather than through a shared campus routine.

Michigan State also fits the more familiar U.S. undergraduate model: broader campus programming, school-spirit events, recreation, and a clearer separation between “college life” and the surrounding city. UvA can be a richer fit for a highly independent student who values Amsterdam itself as part of their education.
