Should I choose Wake Forest or UVA for pre-med?

Choose Wake Forest for pre-med if the costs are reasonably close. Its smaller undergraduate environment, structured pre-health support, and proximity to Wake Forest School of Medicine and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist can make it easier to develop the long-term faculty, research, and clinical relationships that matter in a medical-school application. UVA is also an outstanding pre-med option, but its biggest practical edge is often a substantially lower price for Virginia residents.

Wake Forest’s scale is a real advantage for students who want more accessible office hours, smaller introductory science sections than a large public flagship typically offers, and closer relationships with professors. Those relationships matter not only for recommendation letters, but also for finding research positions and receiving candid guidance on when to apply. Its health-professions advising resources are designed around the sequencing, experiences, and application process pre-med students must manage.

UVA offers a deeper and broader university ecosystem. UVA Health, the university’s academic medical center, creates strong possibilities for clinical exposure, volunteering, and biomedical research, while the larger student body means more labs, student organizations, and course options. The tradeoff is that opportunities can be less automatically personal: students often need to be proactive about contacting labs, seeking mentors, and standing out in larger introductory courses.

Do not assume that attending either university’s affiliated medical school creates a meaningful admissions preference. Medical schools will care far more about your science GPA, MCAT, clinical service, research or sustained intellectual engagement, and letters. A large cost difference should carry serious weight, since medical school is expensive; avoiding substantial undergraduate debt can matter more than a modest difference in pre-med advising.
