Which Has Better Undergraduate Teaching: Columbia or NYU?

The biggest practical tradeoff is Columbia’s more structured, seminar-driven Core Curriculum versus NYU’s greater variation by school, department, and program. At Columbia College, the Core puts nearly every student in discussion-based classes such as Literature Humanities and Contemporary Civilization, creating a built-in setting for close reading, debate, and repeated contact with instructors. Columbia also has a residential undergraduate campus, which can make faculty office hours, advising, and academic events feel more centralized.

NYU can offer excellent teaching and highly engaged professors, particularly in smaller upper-level courses and professionally oriented programs, but the undergraduate experience is less uniform. Its New York City setting and decentralized school structure mean that access to faculty can depend more heavily on the specific program, class size, and how proactively a student uses office hours and department opportunities. Introductory courses at both universities can be large, and neither school guarantees that every renowned professor will be personally available to every undergraduate.
