How useful are acceptance rates when comparing UIUC and Virginia Tech?

Overall acceptance rates are only a rough starting point for UIUC and Virginia Tech. At both universities, your intended major or college can matter far more than the university-wide figure, especially in high-demand fields such as computer science, engineering, business, and architecture. A published overall rate can include applicants to programs with very different levels of capacity and selectivity.

For a student applying to UIUC, admission is closely tied to the major or academic program listed on the application. UIUC’s computer science and engineering-related options, in particular, can be much more difficult to enter than the overall rate suggests. Students applying to less capacity-constrained programs should not assume they face the same odds as applicants to those programs.

Virginia Tech is also a school where college and major context matters. Some applicants are reviewed for particular colleges or programs with limited space, while others apply to areas where the applicant pool and enrollment capacity differ. Its overall rate therefore cannot tell you whether a specific program is more or less attainable than a comparable program at UIUC.

Use acceptance rates to understand that both are large, selective public universities, not to calculate your personal odds. The more useful comparison is your academic record, coursework rigor, and preparation relative to applicants for the exact major or college you select at each school. For UIUC, also pay close attention to whether your application is for a direct-entry, highly structured program; for Virginia Tech, check the admission process and enrollment constraints for the college you are targeting.
