Which offers better undergraduate research opportunities: University of San Diego or UC San Diego?

UC San Diego offers the deeper and broader undergraduate research environment, especially for students interested in STEM, health, marine science, data science, engineering, or social-science research. It is a major research university with extensive laboratories, research centers, and affiliations such as Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the UC San Diego Health system. Undergraduates can pursue faculty lab positions, course-based research, and independent study.

The biggest advantage at UC San Diego is the sheer range of active research groups. A student can explore different labs early, including opportunities connected to oceanography, neuroscience, biotechnology, climate science, computer science, and public health. The tradeoff is that students need to be proactive: large introductory classes and highly sought-after labs can make it important to contact faculty, apply broadly, and build relevant skills before landing a position.
