For school-year internships, USC typically provides easier access because its University Park campus is in central Los Angeles, near Downtown, Exposition Park, Koreatown, and transit connections to many employers. Its large alumni network and extensive school-specific career offices create especially visible pipelines in entertainment, business, technology, communications, public service, and health-related fields. Students can more realistically fit part-time, in-person work into a weekday schedule without a long drive back to campus.

USC suits a student who wants a dense, fast-moving internship environment and is prepared to network early. Los Angeles traffic still matters, but the campus location makes regular commuting materially more manageable than from Malibu.

Pepperdine can work well for a student seeking a smaller, more personal career-development setting, particularly in business, communications, law-adjacent fields, nonprofit work, and relationship-driven industries. Its alumni community is smaller than USC’s but can feel accessible, and career staff may be able to offer more individualized guidance. Pepperdine’s Malibu setting also places students near affluent coastal communities and some firms in the westside region.

The practical limitation is geography. Malibu is beautiful but relatively isolated, and school-year internships in major LA employment centers often require a car, careful scheduling, and significant time for commuting. A Pepperdine student can absolutely intern during the semester, especially through remote, hybrid, or westside-based roles, but they need to plan course times and transportation more deliberately.

For frequent in-person internships during the academic year, USC has the clearer structural advantage. Pepperdine is compelling when the campus environment and smaller network matter more, and the student is willing to target hybrid, remote, or geographically convenient opportunities.
