For most students, in-state cost and where they would be happier living for four years should carry more weight than small perceived differences in computer science prestige.

At Maryland, computer science sits within the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. The campus is also more urban and connected by transit, which can be a real advantage if you want frequent access to internships, events, and city life.

Virginia Tech’s computer science program is part of its College of Engineering, so the academic culture can feel especially oriented toward engineering design, technical teams, and applied problem-solving.
