Is Rice University or Wake Forest University considered more prestigious?

I’m a high school senior comparing Rice and Wake Forest, and I’m trying to understand how their overall academic reputations are generally perceived. I know prestige can vary by field, but I’m mainly asking about broad national reputation rather than a specific major.

Rice University is typically perceived as having the stronger broad national prestige. Its reputation is especially strong in science, engineering, mathematics, architecture, and research, and its membership in the Association of American Universities reinforces its standing as a major research institution.

Wake Forest is a highly respected private university. Its academic environment is often associated more with a close-knit, residential undergraduate experience than with the research-university identity that shapes Rice’s reputation.

For broad name recognition among academics, nationally mobile employers, and applicants to technical or research-oriented graduate programs, Rice tends to carry more weight. That difference is meaningful but not absolute: a strong Wake Forest student can access excellent outcomes, and the better choice should still depend on academic interests, campus culture, financial aid, and the programs each student would actually use.
