Which university has a more rural campus feel: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or University of Maine?

I’m a high school senior comparing the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Maine. I prefer a campus with a rural, less urban atmosphere and want to understand which one feels more rural in its surroundings and day-to-day campus environment.

The University of Maine has the more rural campus feel. Its main campus is in Orono, a small, wooded town near the Stillwater River, with forested surroundings and a setting that feels distinctly removed from a city. Day to day, the environment is quieter and more outdoors-oriented, although Bangor is a short drive away for larger stores, restaurants, and services.

Maine will suit a student who wants campus life to feel like a self-contained community in a natural New England setting. The university’s location supports easy access to hiking, rivers, and outdoor recreation, and the town itself is much smaller than the community surrounding UIUC. Students should still expect a traditional residential university environment rather than total isolation, but the landscape and pace are noticeably rural.

UIUC is surrounded by farmland, so it is not located in a major metropolitan area. However, its campus sits directly between Urbana and Champaign and blends into an active twin-city area with dense student housing, commercial corridors, buses, restaurants, and a busier pedestrian scene. It feels more like a large university embedded in a midsize college town than a rural campus.
