Which university is generally considered more prestigious overall: UIUC or UPenn?

UPenn is generally perceived as more prestigious overall, largely because it is an Ivy League university with broad national and international name recognition. Its professional schools, especially Wharton, Penn Carey Law, and the Perelman School of Medicine, further reinforce that institution-wide reputation.

UIUC is also a major, highly respected research university, but its prestige is more program-specific in public perception. It is particularly renowned for engineering, computer science, business, architecture, and several sciences; in fields such as CS and engineering, UIUC can be viewed as comparable to or more compelling than many private universities, including Penn, depending on the specialty and career goal.
