Is Stanford or UIUC more prestigious for STEM overall?
I’m a high school senior choosing between Stanford and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and I’m mainly focused on how each school’s overall STEM reputation is viewed by graduate programs and employers. I’m not sure whether Stanford’s general prestige or UIUC’s strength in specific engineering and computer science areas matters more.

For overall STEM prestige, Stanford carries the broader and more immediately recognizable national and international brand. Its reputation extends across computer science, engineering, natural sciences, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary work, and it offers unusually strong access to Silicon Valley research, startups, and recruiting.
Stanford is especially suited to a student who wants flexibility across STEM fields, may combine technical study with business, policy, biology, design, or entrepreneurship, and values a smaller private-university environment. For selective graduate programs and hiring, research experience, recommendations, coursework, internships, projects, and technical skills will matter far more once an application is reviewed.
UIUC is an outstanding choice for a student seeking a deeply technical, large-scale public research university, particularly in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, and related fields. In several engineering and computing circles, UIUC is viewed as a powerhouse rather than a lesser alternative, and employers that hire technical talent know its programs extremely well. A strong UIUC student with substantial research, rigorous courses, and relevant experience will be highly credible for elite graduate programs and competitive technical roles.
The practical distinction is breadth of brand versus field-specific strength. Stanford has the edge in overall prestige and cross-industry name recognition. UIUC can be equally compelling, or more compelling personally, for someone who wants its particular technical depth, program scale, and course offerings.
