Is the University of Maryland or Boston College better for pre-med preparation?

Neither school has a built-in advantage that will determine medical-school admission; both can provide excellent preparation.

At Maryland, pre-med students can draw on substantial laboratory research, a large science faculty, and the school’s location near NIH, FDA, hospitals, and public-health organizations. The tradeoff is that College Park is large: introductory science courses can be sizable, and students need to take initiative in seeking research positions, clinical volunteering, office hours, and strong recommendation letters. It is a particularly good setting for an independent student who may want to explore research, neuroscience, public health, or policy in addition to the standard pre-med sequence.

Boston College offers a more intimate undergraduate experience. Its Boston location also creates access to major hospitals and research settings, though students must actively pursue those positions and manage transportation and competition for them.

For medical school, the more important outcome is where you can earn an excellent GPA in demanding science courses, build sustained clinical and service experience, form meaningful faculty relationships, and pursue research or another serious interest over time. Cost matters substantially too, since minimizing undergraduate debt preserves flexibility for medical school.
