The biggest practical tradeoff is USC’s larger, more specialized academic medical network versus Tulane’s smaller-city setting, where relationships with local physicians can sometimes be easier to build. USC undergraduates are close to the Health Sciences Campus, which includes the Keck School of Medicine and Keck Medicine clinical sites, while Los Angeles also offers an unusually broad range of hospitals, specialty practices, and community clinics. Tulane students can pursue exposure through the Tulane School of Medicine, University Medical Center New Orleans, the VA system, and other New Orleans-area providers.

Neither university can promise shadowing, since physician availability, patient privacy rules, and departmental policies determine who may observe. At both schools, students typically secure opportunities through volunteering, research, pre-health advising, alumni contacts, faculty recommendations, and direct outreach. USC’s scale means more potential specialties and clinicians, but it also means more students seeking the same experiences and, depending on the site, more transportation and scheduling complexity.

Tulane can be especially appealing for students who want to develop sustained connections in New Orleans and combine shadowing with service in a city with significant public-health needs. Its medical community is substantial but less sprawling than Los Angeles, which may make repeated contact with a physician or clinic feel more manageable once a connection is made.

For sheer breadth of shadowing possibilities, USC has the edge, particularly for students interested in exploring multiple specialties or major academic medical centers. Tulane is very capable for pre-med clinical exposure, but USC offers the deeper overall physician and hospital ecosystem.
