How does UIUC’s STEM prestige compare with Harvard’s?

In computer science and many engineering fields, UIUC is regarded extremely highly by faculty, graduate programs, and technical employers; its Grainger College of Engineering has deep strength in areas such as systems, AI, computing infrastructure, electrical and computer engineering, and research. Harvard’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is also excellent, but its undergraduate STEM environment is smaller and embedded within a liberal-arts-focused university.

For a student pursuing software, CS research, or traditional engineering, UIUC’s reputation is not a consolation prize to Harvard’s. Recruiters at major technology and engineering firms know UIUC well, and its large technical student community creates substantial course breadth, research labs, project teams, and alumni connections in industry. UIUC can be especially compelling for students who want to be surrounded by many peers taking rigorous, specialized engineering courses.

Harvard carries broader public prestige, which can matter in fields outside STEM and in settings where an institution’s overall brand is the first thing people notice. It also offers exceptional opportunities to combine CS or engineering with economics, government, entrepreneurship, life sciences, or the humanities, plus unusually strong resources across the university.

For STEM credibility alone, UIUC stands alongside Harvard and can have the stronger name in certain technical circles, particularly engineering and computer science. Harvard is the more powerful all-purpose brand; UIUC is the more visibly STEM-specialized choice.
