For overall STEM reputation across employers and graduate programs, UC Berkeley has the broader national and international name recognition. Berkeley is widely associated with elite research in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, and entrepreneurship.
UIUC is not meaningfully behind in the areas where it is strongest. It has an exceptionally well-regarded College of Engineering and is especially respected in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, civil engineering, materials science, physics, mathematics, and agricultural and related sciences. Many technical employers and graduate-school faculty know UIUC as a rigorous, research-intensive institution whose students are very well prepared.
The distinction matters most for students whose interests are still broad versus those entering a particular technical specialty. Employers and graduate programs will care much more about your grades in advanced courses, research record, faculty letters, and demonstrated fit with the program. Both schools can open doors; Berkeley has the stronger overall umbrella reputation, while UIUC is a peer-level destination in several core STEM disciplines.
