NC State vs. Duke: Which university offers better undergraduate research opportunities?

The biggest tradeoff is breadth versus intimacy: NC State offers a larger engineering- and applied-science research ecosystem, while Duke’s smaller undergraduate environment can make it easier to build close relationships with professors and join a focused lab early. NC State’s Centennial Campus, major engineering programs, and ties to industry create especially strong options in areas such as computer science, electrical and computer engineering, materials, textiles, agriculture, and environmental science.

At NC State, motivated undergraduates can find meaningful work in many labs, but students may need to be proactive because departments and research groups are large. Its undergraduate research programs, faculty outreach, course-based research, and capstone design opportunities provide several entry points. For a student interested in hands-on, applied projects, industry-connected work, or a highly specialized engineering field, the volume of available labs is a real advantage.

Duke provides excellent undergraduate access to research through a more faculty-centered setting, including opportunities connected to its engineering school, sciences, medical center, and initiatives such as Bass Connections. Research can be highly interdisciplinary, particularly in biomedical engineering, global health, neuroscience, AI, public policy, and the life sciences. Because Duke has fewer undergraduates relative to its research infrastructure, students who take initiative may have a somewhat more direct path to sustained faculty mentorship.

NC State may be the more compelling choice for students who want the widest menu of applied engineering research, strong industry ties, and specialized technical facilities. The deciding factor should be your intended field and how actively you would pursue professors and research openings at either campus.
