Is Northwestern harder to get into than the University of Minnesota?

Northwestern is substantially harder to gain admission to than the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for most applicants. Northwestern is a highly selective private research university that receives a very large national and international applicant pool for a relatively small entering class. Minnesota is also a strong, respected flagship university.

Northwestern tends to fit students whose academic records are exceptional in a demanding high-school curriculum and whose activities show unusual depth, initiative, or accomplishment. Strong grades and rigorous courses are important, but applicants are also evaluated in a highly competitive context alongside many students with similarly strong credentials. Meeting or exceeding typical academic expectations does not make admission predictable.

The University of Minnesota is often a more realistic target for students with solid to very strong academics who want the resources of a major public research university.

For a junior building a college list, Northwestern should be treated as a high reach for nearly every applicant. Minnesota may range from target to reach depending on residency, academic record, and intended program, but it is meaningfully more attainable than Northwestern in the overall admissions landscape.
