How does the prestige of the University of Minnesota compare with Dartmouth?

Dartmouth carries substantially greater overall prestige in national admissions, employer, and graduate-school perceptions, largely because it is a highly selective Ivy League undergraduate institution with a small, residential liberal-arts focus. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is a respected major public research university, but it is not typically viewed as occupying the same broad prestige tier as Dartmouth.

The schools’ undergraduate environments are very different. Dartmouth offers smaller classes, closer access to faculty, and an alumni network that is particularly visible in national professional circles. Its reputation is centered on undergraduate education and on enrolling a comparatively small, highly selective student body.

Minnesota’s strength is scale and research depth.
