Is McGill or Dartmouth better for student experience?

For a student prioritizing a close-knit campus community and an easier built-in social life, Dartmouth is likely the stronger student-experience choice. Its residential setting in Hanover, New Hampshire, small undergraduate population, and strong traditions create a notably cohesive campus culture. McGill can be equally lively, but its downtown Montreal setting makes the experience more independent and self-directed.

At Dartmouth, much of students’ social and extracurricular life is concentrated on or immediately around campus. The house communities, outdoor traditions, athletics, performing arts, student organizations, and Greek-affiliated social scene give students many recurring places to see the same people and form routines. Hanover is a college town, so campus events carry more of students’ daily social life than they would in a large city.

McGill offers a different kind of involvement: an internationally diverse student body, a large range of clubs, and access to Montreal’s neighborhoods, festivals, food, music, and cultural institutions. Students who enjoy exploring a city, meeting people across many communities, and shaping their own schedule can have an exceptional social life there. However, because many students live across the city and have lives beyond campus, it can take more initiative to turn acquaintances into a consistent friend group.

Dartmouth’s smaller scale also tends to make it easier to become known within organizations and among classmates. McGill’s larger, more urban environment can feel exciting and cosmopolitan, but it may feel less intimate, particularly at the beginning.
