Which school has stronger school spirit, UMass Amherst or Ohio State?

Ohio State has the stronger and more visible school spirit in everyday campus life. Buckeye identity is woven into routines across Columbus through scarlet-and-gray clothing, campus traditions, student organizations, residence halls, and constant conversation around athletics. It is not limited to football Saturdays, although football is a major force.

At Ohio State, traditions such as Script Ohio, the O-H-I-O chant, and the university’s rivalry culture create a common language that many students participate in whether or not they are varsity-sports fans. The size of the student body and the school’s prominent role in Columbus also make campus events feel highly collective; game days, watch parties, pep events, and even ordinary days often carry visible Buckeye branding.

UMass Amherst has real spirit, particularly around hockey, basketball, and the broader pride students feel in the Amherst area, but its atmosphere is less consistently sports-centered. Its campus culture tends to feel more decentralized, with students finding community through residential areas, academic interests, clubs, outdoor life, and the Five College setting. That can still be energetic, but it does not create the same near-universal rallying point that Ohio State does.

For someone who wants school pride to be obvious even on a random weekday, Ohio State is the clearer match. At UMass, spirit is present, but students are more likely to experience it through the communities and activities they choose rather than as a dominant campus-wide presence.
