Which has a smaller-school feel: UIUC or Dartmouth?

Dartmouth has the much stronger small-school, personal-campus feel. Its undergraduate population is far smaller than UIUC’s, and students live in a residential community centered on Hanover.

Dartmouth suits a student who wants the college itself to be their primary social and academic world. The campus is relatively self-contained, and traditions and outdoor life are prominent. It is still academically demanding, but the scale makes forming a recognizable community feel natural.

UIUC can feel personal within the right smaller setting, but not across the university as a whole. It is a large public research university with a broad campus, very large introductory classes in many popular majors, and a student body large enough that daily life can feel more anonymous. Students often build their community through a major, honors program, living-learning community, research lab, student organization, or cultural center rather than through the entire campus.

UIUC may appeal more to someone who wants the resources, course variety, and activity level of a major university while being proactive about finding a smaller circle. For the specific preference of an inherently close-knit environment where knowing classmates and professors is easier from the start, Dartmouth is the clearer match.
