Which campus is more beautiful: UIUC or the University of San Diego?

For pure visual appeal, the University of San Diego will likely feel more beautiful to most students. Its Alcala Park campus is known for cohesive Spanish Renaissance-style buildings, palms, flowering landscaping, courtyards, and elevated views toward Mission Bay. The warm Southern California setting gives it a polished, resort-like atmosphere for much of the year.

USD suits someone who wants a compact campus with a distinct architectural identity and scenic outdoor spaces built into daily life. Many of its academic buildings share cream-colored walls, red-tile roofs, arches, and bell-tower details, so the campus feels intentionally unified rather than pieced together over time. Its hillside location also creates more visual variety than a flat campus.

UIUC is attractive in a different, more traditional Big Ten university way. The Main Quad, lined with mature trees and historic academic buildings, is a particularly pleasant central space, and areas around the Illini Union, the Alma Mater, and the Japan House and Arboretum add character. Its campus is much larger, flatter, and more integrated with the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana, so the overall look is less uniform and more urban-academic.

Choose UIUC’s setting if you like expansive quads, classic collegiate architecture, four distinct seasons, and the energy of a major research university with many different neighborhoods and building styles. Fall foliage and spring greenery can be especially appealing, while winter is a real part of the visual and daily experience.
