For out-of-state students paying close to published prices, both schools require a careful net-cost comparison rather than an assumption that a public university will be inexpensive. Stony Brook’s SUNY tuition structure gives in-state New Yorkers a meaningful built-in advantage, while ASU’s cost can vary widely by campus, program, housing choice, and scholarship offer.

Compare each school’s official financial-aid award, not just tuition. Include mandatory fees, housing and meal plans, health insurance if applicable, travel home, books, and major-specific charges. Engineering, business, nursing, and some lab-based programs may carry additional expenses.
