How does the campus size of UIUC compare with Dartmouth?

The main practical difference is that UIUC is a much larger, flatter, more dispersed university environment, while Dartmouth’s core campus is compact and organized around a traditional New England college green.

On a normal day, UIUC can feel physically expansive even within its main academic zone. The Quad is a central landmark, but engineering, business, residence halls, athletic facilities, research buildings, and the South Farms extend in multiple directions; students commonly walk, bike, or use the campus bus system to cover the distance. Its setting also blends into the twin-city urban grid of Champaign-Urbana rather than feeling contained by a single compact boundary.

Dartmouth feels far more walkable and self-contained at its center. Classes, dining, the library, many residence halls, and the Green are generally within a short walk of one another, although Dartmouth also owns substantial land and outdoor facilities beyond the central campus. Those outlying properties do not make everyday student life feel spread out in the way UIUC’s campus does.

For the physical-campus question alone, UIUC is decisively larger and more sprawling. Dartmouth offers the more concentrated, village-like campus experience, whereas UIUC feels like a large public research university with distinct districts spread across a broad area.
