Is UVA or James Madison University better preparation for law school?

UVA offers a more direct institutional advantage for a student seeking highly selective law-school admission, especially if you expect to thrive in a fast-paced academic environment and can do very well there. Its broader national reputation, extensive alumni network, and proximity to UVA Law can create more opportunities to explore legal scholarship, attend public events, and connect with law-related mentors. Those advantages can be meaningful, but they do not outweigh college grades, LSAT performance, strong writing, and substantive experiences.

JMU can be the wiser preparation for a student who expects to excel in a more undergraduate-centered setting, values close faculty relationships, or would graduate with substantially less debt. JMU students can build strong law-school applications through rigorous major coursework, research or honors projects, campus leadership, internships, community service, and compelling faculty recommendations.

For law school, choose the place where you can maintain a high GPA, develop excellent analytical writing skills, form real relationships with professors, and afford to leave room for law school costs.
