UIUC vs UCLA: Which College Has a Better Social Life?
I’m a high school senior deciding between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and UCLA, and social life is an important part of my college experience. I’m especially interested in how easy it is to make friends and find a sense of community at each school.

UCLA is likely the stronger choice for a broadly active, easy-to-access social life, especially if you value meeting people through residence halls, campus events, outdoor activities, and Los Angeles. The mild weather also makes casual socializing, from club meetings to beach trips and outdoor study sessions, part of everyday life rather than something concentrated around weekends.
Students can build a campus-centered routine while still having options beyond campus, which can be especially appealing if you do not want Greek life or bars to be the main social outlet.
UIUC has a very real and often more traditional Big Ten social scene. Its large, self-contained campus, prominent Greek community, popular campus bars, and school-spirit events can make it easy to meet people who enjoy that environment.
For finding close friends, either school can work well, but UCLA’s residential density and wider range of social settings make community-building less dependent on joining one particular scene. At UIUC, students who enjoy a classic college-town atmosphere may find the social culture especially appealing; at UCLA, the choices tend to be more varied day to day.
