Which university is generally considered more prestigious overall: the University of Delaware or UVA?

I’m a high school senior comparing the University of Delaware and the University of Virginia. I’m trying to understand which school generally carries more overall prestige and reputation with employers and graduate programs, separate from specific majors or costs.

The University of Virginia carries more overall national prestige and is likely to have the stronger name-recognition signal with employers and graduate programs across most fields. UVA is widely regarded as a highly selective public research university with a long-established national reputation, while the University of Delaware is a respected regional and research-focused institution.

UVA’s reputation is especially strong beyond the Mid-Atlantic, aided by its historic profile, prominent alumni network, and nationally recognized undergraduate and professional programs. For broad, name-based impressions in fields such as business, government, law, public policy, consulting, and academic graduate admissions, UVA will typically be perceived as the more prestigious institution.

The difference does not mean a Delaware degree would limit strong career or graduate-school outcomes. Delaware has meaningful strengths in areas connected to its research activity and regional employer relationships, and a student’s grades, internships, research, recommendations, and accomplishments will matter far more than a modest prestige distinction once applying for a specific job or program.
