Is UC Santa Barbara or NYU better for finding college internships?

The biggest practical difference is access: NYU students can pursue internships during the academic year across New York City, while UC Santa Barbara students often rely more on local opportunities, remote work, summer roles, or a deliberate commute to larger Southern California hubs. NYU’s location places students near employers in finance, media, publishing, fashion, nonprofits, tech, arts, and many startups. Santa Barbara is a smaller employment market.

Its urban setting also makes it realistic to interview and work part-time during a semester. The advantage is strongest for fields concentrated in New York, especially finance, advertising, entertainment business, journalism, design, politics, and nonprofit work.

UCSB should not be viewed as lacking internship access. Its career services, faculty research, student organizations, and alumni network can lead to meaningful opportunities, particularly for students who actively apply early. Students in STEM fields can find research and industry-related roles through UCSB and the Goleta area, while summer internship searches can extend to Los Angeles, the Bay Area, San Diego, and beyond. However, many of those opportunities require more planning than simply traveling across a city after class.

For the narrow question of finding internships, NYU has the clearer edge because its location creates more semester-time opportunities and in-person employer access. UCSB can be equally compelling for a student targeting research, engineering, environmental science, or California-based summer work, but it rewards a more proactive search strategy.
