Which is better for pre-med: the University of Miami or the University of Maryland?

Maryland is compelling for a self-directed student who wants breadth: large science departments, many student organizations, and opportunities throughout the nearby D.C., Bethesda, and Baltimore research and health-care corridor.

For either option, the decisive factors should be affordability, your likelihood of earning an excellent GPA in the courses you choose, and whether you can realistically build sustained clinical, service, research, and faculty-mentorship experiences there. Do not choose based on the assumption that one school’s name or medical-school affiliation will substitute for those outcomes.
