Indiana University vs UC Irvine for business: which is better for an undergraduate business major?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both Indiana University and UC Irvine are on it. I want to study business as an undergrad, but I’m not sure which school has the stronger overall business program and reputation.
I’m mostly looking for a simple comparison of how they stack up for business students.

The biggest practical tradeoff is direct access to a nationally known undergraduate business school at Indiana versus UC Irvine’s broader, less traditional business pathway at the undergraduate level. Indiana’s Kelley School of Business is one of the best-known undergrad business programs in the country, with a very established recruiting pipeline, deep alumni network, and lots of structured specialization options. UC Irvine is a strong university with a respected business presence, but for undergraduates its business identity is usually not seen as being on the same level as Kelley’s brand recognition.
For a student who wants a classic undergraduate business experience, Indiana has the clearer edge. Kelley is built around undergrad business in a way that is immediately legible to employers, especially for fields like finance, consulting, marketing, accounting, and management. It also tends to offer more visibility for business clubs, case competitions, career services, and employer connections specifically centered on business majors.
UC Irvine still has real strengths. Its location in Orange County is valuable, the campus is strong academically, and students can benefit from proximity to Southern California industries and internships. But when people compare the two specifically for undergraduate business, UC Irvine is usually stronger as a great overall university than as the more recognized undergrad business destination.
So if the question is simply which school stacks up better for an undergraduate business major, Indiana University is the stronger pick. Kelley has the more established reputation, the more prominent undergraduate business structure, and the more widely recognized business-school brand.
