Arizona State vs NYU for finance careers: which school gives better recruiting opportunities?
I’m a high school senior trying to decide between Arizona State and NYU, and I want to study finance. I know both schools have business programs, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally better for getting internships and entry-level jobs in finance.
I’m mostly interested in how much the school name, alumni network, and recruiting access matter for finance careers.

The biggest practical tradeoff is direct access to major finance recruiting pipelines versus lower-cost, still-respectable preparation with more regional reach. NYU places you in New York, where internships during the school year, alumni access, and on-campus attention from banks and financial firms are unusually strong. Arizona State can still lead to finance jobs, especially through the W. P. Carey School of Business, but its recruiting footprint is less concentrated in the highest-profile finance hubs and tends to be stronger in the Southwest and for broader business roles.
For finance specifically, school name and network matter more than they do in many other fields, especially for investment banking, certain buy-side roles, and highly competitive early-career analyst programs. NYU benefits from being deeply tied into the NYC market, and that proximity changes the internship game because students can intern part-time during semesters, attend more in-person events, and build relationships earlier.
ASU is not shut out of finance recruiting, and strong students there can absolutely land good internships and jobs. W. P. Carey is well regarded, and students who network aggressively, join finance-focused organizations, and pursue internships early can do well. But compared head-to-head with NYU, the path to elite finance recruiting is usually less built-in and more self-driven from ASU.
If your goal includes investment banking, asset management at top firms, high-end corporate finance in New York, or maximizing access to finance internships while in school, NYU offers the stronger platform. If the cost difference is very large, though, that matters a lot, because taking on heavy debt for finance is not automatically wise unless NYU is clearly affordable or your career goals are squarely in the parts of finance where its recruiting edge is most valuable.
So on recruiting opportunities alone, NYU has the advantage. ASU is a solid option, but for finance careers where brand, alumni reach, and immediate access to recruiters carry real weight, NYU gives you more doors from the start.
