Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Dartmouth better for pre-med?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intimacy. UIUC gives you a huge research university with extensive science resources and many labs, but it can feel more self-directed and some introductory pre-med classes are large. Dartmouth offers a smaller, more personal setting where advising and faculty access are often easier to build into your daily experience.

For pre-med support, Dartmouth has an edge in hands-on advising and close professor relationships, which matter for recommendation letters, mentoring, and finding research without getting lost in the crowd. The undergraduate focus is strong, and students often find it easier to stand out in smaller classes.

UIUC is excellent if you want breadth and initiative-driven opportunity. There is a lot available in biology, chemistry, engineering-related health research, data science, and public health-adjacent work, and motivated students can build an impressive pre-med profile there. But at a large public university, you often need to seek out professors, research openings, clinical volunteering, and advising more actively.

Course difficulty matters at both places, but in different ways. Dartmouth science courses are definitely rigorous. UIUC is also rigorous, especially in foundational STEM classes, and some students feel the large-class environment makes the early pre-med path more competitive and less personal.

If your priority is the strongest day-to-day pre-med support structure, easier access to individualized advising, and a campus where faculty connection is built in, Dartmouth is the more favorable choice. If cost is meaningfully lower at UIUC and you are confident you will chase opportunities aggressively on your own, UIUC can still be a very strong pre-med option, but between the two, Dartmouth is the one I would pick for pre-med.
