Rutgers or Boston University for city life: which one feels more urban as a college experience?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Boston University is woven directly into a major city every day, while Rutgers gives you access to urban areas but usually not the feeling of living inside one all the time. BU sits right along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, with city blocks, transit, restaurants, shops, and internships immediately around you. Rutgers, especially in New Brunswick, has an active college-town environment and nearby downtown, but its campuses are more spread out and connected by buses, so the day-to-day experience feels less fully urban.

If what you want is to step outside and instantly be in a dense city environment, BU is the clearer match. Boston’s public transit is built into student life there, and a lot of the social, academic, and professional experience happens in spaces shared with the city itself. It does not feel like a self-contained campus in the traditional sense.

Rutgers is not isolated, but it feels more mixed. New Brunswick has restaurants, nightlife, and train access, and you can get to places like Newark or New York fairly easily, which is a real advantage. But daily life at Rutgers often revolves around moving between different campus areas, and that creates more of a campus-system feel than an immersed city feel.

So for everyday city life, Boston University comes out ahead pretty clearly. Rutgers can give you urban access, but BU is more likely to deliver the experience of being part of a city the moment you leave class or your residence hall.
