What is campus life like at Rutgers compared to Stony Brook?

Rutgers tends to have the fuller, more traditionally social campus life. It has multiple campuses in New Brunswick linked by buses, Big Ten sports, a larger party and club scene, and a surrounding college-town environment that gives students more to do outside class. Stony Brook can absolutely be social too, but day to day it is more often described as quieter and more commuter-influenced.

One big difference is the setting around campus. Rutgers New Brunswick is woven into an active town with restaurants, off-campus housing, student hangouts, and a visible weekend scene, so campus life often spills beyond dorms and classrooms. Stony Brook is more self-contained and suburban, which can make the social atmosphere feel more centered on scheduled events, residence halls, and student organizations rather than a constant college-town buzz.

It is also usually easier at Rutgers to feel like there is always something happening. The scale of the student body, the number of clubs, and the presence of major athletics create a lot of built-in energy, even though the bus system and spread-out campuses can sometimes make the school feel less intimate. At Stony Brook, students often say you need to be a bit more intentional about joining clubs, staying on campus, and making plans, especially because a noticeable share of students commute.

Social style is another real distinction. Rutgers has more of the classic large public university vibe: louder, busier, and more varied socially. Stony Brook often feels more academically centered and lower-key, with many students friendly but more focused on classes, labs, and smaller circles. If what you want is a campus that feels active almost by default, Rutgers has the clearer edge.
